What a great start to what will be a long vintage! We kicked off early this year on the 24th January due to an impending downpour of rain. Picking began with the ripest blocks of chardonnay and our personal favourite Semillon block (which is looking fantastic). Given the draining amount of heat we’ve received, the quality of our grapes were above expectations.
As of today, all of the Hunter whites are in and I’m very happy with our results so far. We are inoculating tank juices tomorrow and some wild barrel ferments of chardonnay are already underway. We’re still around 2 weeks from beginning to pick our Hunter Shiraz.
The extreme heat and daily risk of storms are testing nerves but the smell of ferments and new french oak are keeping the adrenaline pumping! Vintage, love it!
